Two venues drawing steady crowds are Lindenwood Park on 17th Avenue South, where staff added extra picnic tables and a new splash pad this season, and the Plains Art Museum on First Avenue North, which runs drop-in art workshops every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

City records show 1,800 visitors used the Lindenwood splash pad on the first Saturday in July, while the museum logged 420 family admissions during the same weekend last year at a cost of $12 per adult and free entry for children under 12.

Outdoor stops along the river

At Lindenwood Park, groups can start with the fenced playground near the parking lot, then walk the paved loop trail that runs 1.2 miles along the riverbank before stopping at the adjacent disc golf course open until dusk.

Parents have also booked shaded shelters for $25 a day through the parks department website, a step many families take by Thursday to secure space near the restrooms and grills.

Indoor backup at the museum

Those seeking air-conditioned options move to the Plains Art Museum, where the current children’s studio features clay modeling stations and a rotating display of local photography that opened July 3.

Staff recommend arriving before noon on weekends to avoid the afternoon rush, with the museum café selling boxed lunches for $8 that include a drink and snack suitable for all ages.
